Condolence message on the passing on of former Zambian First Lady, Dr Maureen Mwanawasa

Lusaka, 14 August 2024: The board, management and staff of Panos Institute Southern Africa (PSAf) are deeply saddened by the passing on of former Zambian First Lady, Dr Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa, on 13th August 2024.

Dr Mwanawasa was a strong ally and supporter of our work. In 2012, she supported our media campaign to mobilise Men Rise to Stop Violence Against Women. We recall how at the launch of the campaign, on 22 June 2012, Dr Mwanawasa spoke strongly about the need to identify and address the systems and structures that fuel violence against women in society.

The passing on of Dr Mwanawasa is a great loss not only to her family, but to the Zambian nation at large. The country has lost a motherly figure who was willing to contribute to the solutions of various developmental challenges.

We pray for God’s comfort and strength upon Dr Maureen Mwanawasa’s family, friends, colleagues and all those she touched.

May Her Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.

 Vusumuzi Sifile, PSAf Executive Director
